i like watching movies that remind me of my old man
although they'd leave me feeling lonely and sad
he drank a lot but kept on being the loving kind
he made a lot of empty promises but kept the dream alive

he had the best sense of humor too
he'd always say don't do what i would do
he wasn't perfect at all but good where it counts
he gave me his crooked smile when he was proud

"is there anybody out there!?" i just need to text back
to let him know we haven't forgotten him just sometimes we lost track
he told me that the devil was trying to get in
all i could think was holy shit! i wish that i could help him

the last thing that i told him
was sorry for not being around
all i heard back were
hospital sounds
then he hugged me a week later
in a dream
